Vomiting

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS: Vomiting is a symptom due to the dysfunction of the stomach in digestion and transportation. It can be seen in acute and chronic gastritis and neurotic vomiting, pylorospasm, pyloric stenosis, cholecystitis. 

ETIOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY: Vomiting is caused by the ascending stomach Qi instead of its normal descending direction. lts causes include the following:

(1). Exogenous factors, such as wind, coId, summer heat, and dampness, attack the stomach, so it losses the normal Qi movement of descending. 

(2). Excessive food, cold drinks, fatty or unclean food damage the stomach, cause the Qi to move upward. 

(3). Stagnant liver Qi due to depression, anger, or any other strong and prolonged unstable emotion, will attack the spleen and stomach easily from the theory of five elements. 

(4). The deficiency of spleen and stomach loses its normal function of transformation and transportation, causing indigestion, Qi and blood deficiency, Yang deficiency, etc. 

DIFFERENTIATIONS: 

1. Vomiting due to the Exogenous Factors:

Indications: Sudden strong vomiting, accompanied with fever aversion to cold or wind, headache, general soreness and pain, fullness at gastric and chest regions, white and greasy tongue coating, 

Treatment & Formula: Dispel exogenous factors, eliminate the turbid using fragrant herbs. 

Products:

    • Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (Agastache Formula, Item No. 2271 ): This is a very commonly used formula 'for vomiting, diarrhea, headache during the summer time due to the damp cold, or wind cold factors. 

2. Vomiting due to the Stagnation of Food:

Indications: Vomiting, belching, acid regurgitation, fullness of gastric and abdominal areas, worse after eating, release after vomiting, fetid loose stool or constipation, thick and greasy tongue coating, slippery, short and strong pulse. 

Treatment & Formulas: Promote the function of stomach and spleen to help food digestion.
