Stomachace

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS: Stomachache is a symptom showing in many gastrointestinal disorders, such as acute and chronic gastritis, stomach and duodenal ulcer, stomach cancer, gastric neurosis, and diseases of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas.

ETIOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY:The major reasons for stomachache stems from the following: some pathological factors attack stomach or stagnate in the stomach, such as coldness, unhealthy food, inharmonious liver Qi, or some internal heat; another is caused by stomach Yin deficiency or spleen and stomach Qi deficiency. All the above reasons cause stomachache by either stagnation of the stomach Qi, or lack of Yin nourishing, or deficient Qi. 

DIFFERENTIATION: 

1. Coldness Attacks Stomach:

Indications: Sudden stomach pain, prefer warm or hot pressing, aversion to cold, likes to drink hot water, white tongue coating, wiry and tight pulse. 

Treatment & Formulas: Warm stomach so as to release the pain. In a light case, pain can be stopped by simply warm pressing in the local area or drinking some fresh ginger soup, or taking the right herbal formulas.

Products:

    • Chai Hu Gui Jiang Tang (Bupleurum, Cinnamon, and Ginger Combination, Item No. 2152): This treats gastric leer with cold symptoms. 
    • An Zhong San (Cardamom and Fennel Formula, Item No. 2085): This treats stomachaches of the cold type. 
    • Xiang Su San (Cyperus and Perilla Combination, Item No. 2124): This treats stomachache with coldness combined with internal Qi stagnation and external wind cold symptoms. 

2. Food Stagnation:

Indications: Stomach pain and fullness, eructation, anorexia, or vomiting undigested food, released feeling after vomiting, uneasy stool, thick and greasy tongue coating, slippery pulse. 

Treatment & Formulas: Relieve food stagnation and regulate the stagnant Qi. 

Products:

  • Chi Pi Wan (Ginseng and Hawthorn Formula, Item No. 2193): This treats indigestion with spleen deficiency.
  • Jai Wei Ping Wei San (Magnolia and Ginger Formula Plus, Item No. 2067): This treats indigestion with stomach dampness. 

3. Stagnant Liver Qi Attacks Stomach:

Indications: Full and extended sensation of stomach area, stomachache radiated to hypochondria regions, frequent eructation, uncomfortable stool, all symptoms are worse when strong emotions show, thin and white tongue coating, wiry pulse. 

Treatment & Formulas: Regulate and harmonize the liver Qi. 

Products:

    • Yi Gan San (Bupleurum Formula, Item No. 2105)
    • Xiao Yao San (Tang-kuei and Bupleurum Formula, Item No. 2195)
    • Gan Mai Da Zao Tang (Licorice and Jujube Combination, Item No. 2294): This is a very good formula to treat the gastroneruosis by regulating the spleen and harmonizing the liver with stomach. 

4. Stagnated Liver Qi changed To Stomach Heat:

Indications: Strong gastric pain, hot or burning sensation in stomach, anger, restlessness, acid regurgitation, nausea, dry and bitter mouth, red tongue body, yellow tongue coating, wiry or rapid pulse. 

Treatment & Formulas: Clear the heat and harmonize liver and stomach. 

Products:

    • Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Bupleurum and Paeonia Formula, Item No. 2068)
    • Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentiana Combination, Item No. 2267): This treats severe liver fire symptoms, combined with Item No. 2068 or
    • Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang (Paeonia and Licorice Combination, Item No. 2097).
    • Huang Lian Tang (Corptis Combination, Item No. 2209): It treats stomach heat with dampness and Qi deficiency of stomach as well.
    • Ching Wei San (Coptis and Rehmannia Formula, Item No. 2182): This treats stomach and liver heat. 

5. Stomach Yin Deficiency:

Indications: Chronic dull gastric pain, dry mouth and throat, thirsty, dry and hard stool, red and dry tongue body, thready and wiry pulse. 

Treatment & Formulas: Tonify the stomach Yin.

6. Blood Stasis in Stomach

Indications: Chronic gastric pain, stabbing pain located in a fixed area, refuse pressing, dark or purple tongue, unsmooth pulse. 

Treatment & Formulas: Regulate the liver Qi and blood, resolve the blood stasis and relieve the gastric pain. 

Products:

    • Dang Gui Shao Yao San (Tang-kuei and Paeonia Formula, Item No. 2233): It treats blood stasis in gastric or abdomen area.
    • Si Wu Tang (Tang-kuei Four Combination, Item No. 2060): It can be combined with Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang (Paeonia and Licorice Combination, Item No. 2097): This tonifies and regulates the blood stasis, harmonizes the liver and relieves the gastric pain. 

7. Spleen and Stomach Deficiency and Coldness

Indications: Chronic gastric pain, acid and water regurgitation, likes warm and pressing, poor appetite, general fatigue, cold limbs, loose stool, pale tongue body, thin and white tongue coating, weak and soft pulse. 

Treatment & Formulas: Tonify the spleen and stomach to relieve the gastric pain. 

Products:

    • Xiao Jian Zhong Tang ( Monor Cinnamon and Paeonia Combination, Item No. 2030): This tonifies the spleen and relieves gastric pain. 
    • Li Zhong Tang (Ginseng and Ginger Combination, Item No. 2191): This treats the symptoms of middle (spleen and stomach) Yang and Qi deficiency. 
    • Chi Pi Wan (Ginseng and Hawthorn Formula, Item No. 2193): It strengthens spleen and stomach functions by helping with food digestion. 
    • Gui Pi Tang (Ginseng and Longan Combination, Item No. 2261): This treats the spleen deficiency and promotes the Qi and blood production.
    • An Zhong San (Cardamom and Fennel Formula, Item No. 2085): This treats the middle Yang deficiency symptoms. 
    • Gan Wei Nun (Corydalis and Cinnamon Formula, Item No. 2296): This treats cold symptoms of the stomach and abdomen.
    • Wu Zhu Yu Tang (Evodia Combination, Item No. 2120): This treats liver and stomach coldness with spleen deficiency. 
    • Wei Ling Tang (Magnolia and Hoelen Combination, Item No. 2135): It treats spleen Yang deficiency with edema.
