Abdominal Pain In Pregnancy

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS: Continuous lower abdominal pain during pregnancy. Chinese medicine considers that this pain is due to the obstruction of the uterine channel, so it is called Bao Zhu (obstruction of uterus). 

ETIOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY: The major pathogenic reason for abdominal pain during pregnancy is due to the abnormal circulation of Qi and blood, causing the obstruction of uterine channel and pain. The following are the common seen etiological factors that cause the abnormal circulation of Qi and blood. 

(1). Interior cold due to the kidney Yang deficiency will lead to the obstruction of Qi and blood circulation. 

(2). Blood deficiency causes the disnourishment of uterus. 

(3). Liver Qi stagnation due to depression, or other unhealthy emotions will lead to blood stagnation and cause the abdominal pain during pregnancy. 

DIFFERENTIATIONS: 

1. Interior Cold due to the Yang Deficiency:

Indications: Pain and cold sensation at lower abdomen during pregnancy, whitish or pale complexion, cold limbs, poor appetite, loose stool, pale tongue with thin coating, deep and weak pulse.

Treatment & Formula: Warm the uterus and nourish blood so as to stop the pain.

Products:

  • Xiong Gui Jiao Ai Tang (Tang - kuei and Gelatin Combination, Item No. 2100)
  • following herbs may be added to strengthen its function: Du Zhong (Eucommia Conex, Item No. 1299), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Radix, Item No. 1289), and Bu Gu Zi (Psoralea Semen, Item No. 1206). 

2. Blood deficiency Type:

Indications: Slow and light abdominal pain, relief from pressing the painful area, yellowish and dull complexion, dizziness, blurry vision, palpitation, nervousness, pale tongue, thin coating, thready and slippery pulse. 

Treatment & Formula: Tonify blood, regulate and harmonize the circulation of Qi so as to stop the pain. 

Products:

  • Dang Gui Shao Yao San (Tang - kuei and Paeonia Formula, Item No. 2233): This is a very good formula for the slight pain at lower abdomen for women. 

3. Liver Qi Stagnation Type:

Indications: Full or extended feeling of chest, hypochondriac region, and abdomen, or pain at lower abdomen, frequent belching, acid regurgitation, restlessness, easily angered, or headache, thin and greasy tongue coating; wiry and slippery pulse. 

Treatment & Formula: Regulate and harmonize the liver Qi so as to remove the Qi obstruction. 

Products:

  • Xiao Yao San (Tang - kuei and Bupleurum Formula, Item No. 2195): It is a typical formula for liver Qi regulating and harmonizing. Shu Gen can be added for this formula to strengthen the function of Qi regulating. 
  • Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Bupleurum and Paeonia Formula, Item No. 2068): This is used for liver Qi stagnation plus interior heat.
