Maitake Mushroom Extract
Maitake is the Japanese name for the edible fungus Grifola frondosa , It is also called "Dancing mushroom". It has been used traditionally both as a food and for traditional purposes in Japan and China. Polysaccharide constituents of Maitake have been associated in animal studies with multiple bioactive properties. Extracts of maitake mushroom, and particularly the beta-glucan polysaccharide constituent, have been associated with immune modulation in pre-clinical studies. Maitake's main functions are activating the immune system.
Maitake is known as an adaptogen and tonic, and as such it aids healthy people to keep their normal levels of blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight if all of these are already within a normal range. The beta-glucan in Maitake is a cell-surface carbohydrate. This means that beta glucan aids cell communication in specific circumstances. As a polysaccharide including so called D-Fraction beta-glucan, this glucan activates the white blood cells, called macrophages, which in turn devour microorganisms that produce pathogens.
