Antrodia camphorata mushroom is highly valued as a medicinal mushroom in Taiwan (known as Zhang Zhi or Niu-Zhang Zhi), where it is commonly used as an anti-fatigue, and liver protective supplement by folk people in Taiwan. The wild mushroom grown inside the decayed wood of camphor tree. Due to its high medicinal value, the mushroom is very hard to find and extremely expensive. 100 grams of wild harvested can cost more than 1,000 US dollars in the market. However, it is relatively unknown outside of Taiwan and virtually unknown in the Western world. The government has aided and sponsored a wide research for finding the correct method to let it grow in a controlled environment for many years. Now the method has been found and the cultivated mushroom is available.
A great deal of work has been carried out on A. camphorata. The list of bioactivities of crude extracts is huge. Over 200 compounds consisting of terpenoids, benzenoids, lignans, benzoquinone derivatives, succinic and maleic derivatives, in addition to polysaccharides have been identified. The Terpenoids variety exceeds all of the Reishi mushrooms speci combined. It is hoped that Antrodia mycelium are now widely used in Asia one day can act as an efficient alternative phytotherapeutic agent or a synergizer for healthy immune system support.
